Coolers for the House of Hope

On Saturday, May 7, some of the people associated with Grace and Main got together in the morning to try to help a local cause in a small way. Thanks to the gifts of our members and the generous donations or our partners and those who are excited about what Grace Coolers for the House of Hopeand Main is up to, we had money to go and buy food to pack into coolers for the House of Hope, here in Danville. Each day, the guests at the House of Hope receive breakfast through the grace of donors and dinner through a partnership with Danville Regional Medical Center, but during lunch they are out in the city looking for solutions to some of the challenges they face. So, to help in some small way, we volunteered to pack a couple of coolers with non-perishable food items in brown paper bags so that our homeless brothers and sisters will have a meal at midday.

So, we went to a local store and loaded up a few shopping carts with food to pack for our friends downtown.

We came back to the house on Broad St. and began to test our assembly line skills as we packed the items into brown paper bags, and the bags into coolers.

We even had some help from some younger volunteers.

I (Josh) was on the taping and packing end of the assembly line and, in spite of the ample help from the little ones, that’s where the whole process slowed down. But, it left us a great opportunity for a picture:

After packing these lunches, we went on to another project (that I’ll post about in a few days), but we delivered the coolers later that day. Not all of us could make it and our younger friends had naps to get to, but those who could go were glad to visit with the House of Hope director, Steve Anderson.

Grace and Main is excited about doing our small part to love and care for those who live downtown and those who find shelter at the House of Hope. If these lunches turn out to be a blessing, then we would like to continue to stock these coolers. Your donation will help make it possible for us to buy food and water for those who might benefit from a simple act of grace.

Check out our website for more information about upcoming projects and events. You are always welcome to worship with us on Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. at 228 Broad St. You’re also always welcome to eat dinner with the community and join in our ongoing discussions on Thursday night at 6:00 and 7:15, respectively, at the same address. Donations can be made by check (made payable to “Grace and Main Fellowship”) and sent to the same address–your donation is tax-deductible and 100% of what you donate will be used to address poverty and homelessness issues in downtown Danville, VA.
